South Africa, we’re not Tweeting as much as we used to

As South Africans, our interest in Twitter might be waning. This seems to be indicated in the latest research done by youKnow Digital, in partnership with Crimson Hexagon.

According to last year’s data, which tallies all of the Twitter posts – identified as coming from SA – from 1 January 2014 to 30 June 2014, the volume topped 154,007,496 posts (see graph below).

SA Twitter 2014 Jan to June

This shows the Twitter volume out of South Africa for January 2014 to end June 2014

For this year (2015), however, the number for the same period only sits at 132,921,746. That’s only about 86% of what it was last year.

SA Twitter Volume for 1st half of 2015

This shows the SA Twitter volume for the first half of 2015.

This is striking, considering that SA’s number of Twitter followers are increasing by approximately 20% year on year (according to a recent WorldWideWorx study).
